EU at the UN

The EU's commitment to effective multilateralism, with the UN at its core, is a central element of its external action. As a UN observer with enhanced status, the EU delegation coordinates with its 28 Member States to speak with one voice. The EU also works closely with the UN secretariat and its agencies, funds & programmes, partnering on a range of global issues and challenges.

16 September 2016, Brussels – European Council President Donald Tusk will address the UN General Assembly on behalf of the EU on 21 September.  He will also attend the UN high level meeting on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants and the leaders’ summit on the global refugee crisis.

 

Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, will address the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on behalf of the EU on 21 September. The general debate of the 71st session of the UNGA will open on 20 September.

President Tusk will attend the UN high level meeting on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants. At this event, leaders will seek a global response to address the root causes of these large movements and to improve responsibility sharing.

President Tusk will also attend the leaders’ summit on the global refugee crisis, hosted by US President Barack Obama. This event will aim to reach new global commitments to increase humanitarian funding, admit more refugees through legal pathways and increase refugees’ self-reliance and inclusion.

In the margins of the UNGA, he will have the opportunity to meet with other leaders.
