22 November 2016, New York – European Union Statement delivered by H.E. Ms. Joanne Adamson, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations, at the Informal meeting of the General Assembly to hold an exchange with Member States, civil society, the private sector, diaspora communities and migrant organizations on the process leading to the adoption of a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration to be presented at an intergovernmental conference on international migration in 2018
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.
First I would like to thank the co-facilitators for organizing this informal meeting and important exchange with so many different and important actors, which are relevant when we talk about migration.
It is our strong belief, that in order to ensure that we make the negotiations and the compact a success and include the voices of those most affected, an active and visible participation of all stakeholders, including civil society, scientific and knowledge institutions, parliaments, local authorities, diaspora communities and the private sector is key. And we should not wait to start this engagement and mutual exchange until we start the official negotiations on the content of the Global Compact but start right, now, as we do today, and continue to do so throughout the whole process.
We are strongly supportive of formats like this and we believe that listening to each other will only enrich our discussion and ensure that we address the concerns of those most affected.
We are looking forward to continue this exchange, today and over the next two years.
