EU at the UN

The EU's commitment to effective multilateralism, with the UN at its core, is a central element of its external action. As a UN observer with enhanced status, the EU delegation coordinates with its 28 Member States to speak with one voice. The EU also works closely with the UN secretariat and its agencies, funds & programmes, partnering on a range of global issues and challenges.

Mr. Chairman,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union.

We would like to thank Ms. Sharon Van Buerle, Director of the Programme Planning and Budget Division, for her introduction of the reports of the Secretary-general and also Mr. Rajat Saha, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, for the respective reports of the Advisory Committee.

Mr. Chairman,

I would briefly like to address the reports on the construction of additional facilities at the Vienna International Centre and at the Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, as well as on the supplementary agreement between the United Nations and the Carnegie Foundation on the use of the Peace Palace at The Hague.

The EU wants to express its continued appreciation to host governments and in this regard in particular the Governments of Austria, Ethiopia and the Netherlands for their continued support and cooperation with the Secretary-General.

The EU reiterates its gratitude to the Government of Austria for tacking upon itself the major part of the financial burden related with the on-going construction project in Vienna, as well as for assuming the responsibility and bearing the costs of asbestos removal, which will contribute to the overall improved conditions in Vienna International Centre.

We would also like to thank the Government of Ethiopia for allocating the additional land to the Economic Commission for Africa and we are looking forward for its continued cooperation to ensure the smooth progress of the project.

As for the Peace Palace in The Hague, the EU is grateful to the Government of Netherlands for its continued support to the maintenance of the Peace Palace through the Carnegie Foundation. The EU welcomes the successful conclusion of the negotiations on the supplementary agreement between the Secretary-General and the Carnegie Foundation specifying the allocation of space for the International Court of Justice.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
