11 November 2016, Brussels – The European Commission will be represented at this year’s United Nations climate change conference COP22 which is currently taking place in Marrakesh in Morocco.
Among other events, he will host the EU Energy Day at the COP22. In the framework of the EU’s “Ocean Week” initiative (7-13 November 2016), the Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella will outline Europe’s current efforts to implement the Paris Agreement. Commissioner Vella will present the EU’s latest initiative aimed at bettering ocean governance worldwide. He will then participate in the High-Level Plenary of the Ocean Action Day.
Given the crucial role of oceans as climate regulators, Commissioner Vella will show the need to preserve their health by acting collectively. The EU also supports the Global Climate Action Agenda aimed at catalysing multi-stakeholder action. Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica will stress the important links between climate action, sustainable energy and development cooperation.
He will participate as the key note speaker at the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI) side-event, which will include the signature of a Joint Declaration on Renewable Energies in Africa and of two specific Joint Declarations on Renewable Energy with Mozambique and Zambia. The Commissioner will also open the meeting of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa and speak at a targeted side-event on the particular challenges and opportunities for women in climate action.
