Summary: 19 February 2010, Brussels – The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, issued the following statement today on the situation in Niger:
"The HR follows closely the political crisis that Niger has been facing. The EU shares AU and ECOWAS deep concern on the latest developments and supports their mediating efforts . The HR condemns the seizure of the power by a military coup d´état in Niger and calls upon all actors involved to engage immediately in a democratic process allowing for rapid establishment of the constitutional order in the country."
