Zimbabwe: EUHR Solana congratulates Morgan Tsvangirai on being sworn in as Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity

Summary: 11 February 2009, Brussels – Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, issued the following statement today congratulating Morgan TSVANGIRAI on taking office as Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity of Zimbabwe.

"I congratulate Morgan TSVANGIRAI on taking office today as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. This could mark the beginning of a new era for Zimbabwe, provided the government he will be heading is given the necessary authority and opportunity to do its job.

The Government of National Unity of Zimbabwe will be judged by its commitment to reform and by the way in which the huge challenges before it are tackled. In the meantime, I would like to reiterate the EU's commitment to helping and supporting the Zimbabwean people."
