Summary: Statement by EU Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on the assassination of Pierre Gemayel (22 November 2006, Brussels)
Statement of the Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, on the assasination of Pierre Gemayel
"I am deeply shocked by the assassination of the Lebanese Minister of Industry, Pierre Gemayal, today in Beirut. The European Commission deplores this appalling crime, which must not be allowed to undermine stability in Lebanon. Our thoughts are with the family of Minister Gemayal, and with the Lebanese people, at their time of loss, and we send them our sincere condolences.
We trust that every effort will be made to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice. The Commission calls on all parties in Lebanon and in the region to exercise restraint."
