Statement by EU HR Ashton on the political situation in Iraq

Summary: 21 December 2011, Brussels - Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission made today the following statement on the political situation in Iraq:

"The EU has long been encouraging and supporting the Government of Iraq in its work towards the development of a pluralistic and inclusive democracy. At this critical juncture, I am extremely concerned about the reports coming from Iraq regarding the internal political developments. I therefore urge the Government of Iraq and all the political forces to engage in an inclusive dialogue to address political differences and respond to the needs of all Iraqis. I welcome the initiative to launch a national conference to that end."
